ORLANDO, Fla. – [April. 23, 2022] – Dr. Phillips Charities, the community builder behind the $700-million Packing District project, has announced Schmid Constructionas the contractor for the juice stand located at the northeast corner of Princeton Street and Orange Blossom Trail. Originally built in 1948, an iconic piece of the early Dr. Phillips citrus operations, the juice stand replica will serve as a landmark for The Packing District and pay homage to the citrus industry in the area.
In keeping with Dr. Phillips’ belief in innovation, inclusion and diversity, The Packing District set a standard for a high level of participation from minority businesses. Over 50% of the construction work for this project will go to highly qualified minority owned businesses, many of whom are located within 5 miles of the Packing District. “That is exactly what the Phillips family would have wanted to see, and we feel a tremendous sense of pride in bringing that to fruition” said Ken Robinson, President/CEO of Dr. Phillips Charities.
With an eye toward preserving the buildings of the past while celebrating the future, the development team seeks to preserve and reuse as many existing structures in the Packing District as possible. Remnant brick repurposed from old buildings constructed by Dr. Phillips in the mid-1900s will be upcycled as exposed aggregate for the new juice stand landscape walls. It’s an approach that will be employed across multiple buildings and become a texture synonymous with The Packing District.
Schmid Construction is a leader in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) construction and have successfully completed multiple LEED Platinum projects. Their work focuses on implementing construction practices for sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. When The Packing District was seeking to build the juice stand with the repurposed remnant brick, collaborating with Schmid Construction provided a strong missioned aligned opportunity for the two organizations.
“Schmid Construction, which includes the Schmid Family and our loyal employees, welcomes the opportunity to assist Dr. Phillips Charities in building this replica of the original Dr. Phillips Juice Stand in Orlando’s Packing District. This project will pay homage to Dr. Phillip Phillips’ extraordinary impact he and his family had on the citizens of the Orlando. We are humbled for the opportunity to play a part in this iconic undertaking,” said Tom Dozier, Corporate Development Director of Schmid Construction.
“Schmid Construction has extensive experience in creating efficient and sustainable facilities and I have no doubt that they will exceed our expectations with the juice stand,” said Ken Robinson, President/CEO of Dr. Phillips Charities. “We are all very excited about this project, and love that we are able to recreate such a timeless piece of our history.”
